Aldactone is a diuretic that helps retain potassium while preventing excessive salt absorption in the body.
Aldactone is prescribed to diagnose or treat conditions associated with elevated aldosterone levels in the body. Aldosterone, a hormone made by the adrenal glands, regulates the balance of salt and water in the body. Additionally, Aldactone is used to manage fluid retention (edema) in individuals suffering from congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or a kidney issue known as nephrotic syndrome. It is also beneficial in treating or preventing hypokalemia, which is characterized by low potassium levels in the blood.
Aldactone should not be used if you have kidney disease, difficulties with urination, or elevated potassium levels. Avoid using potassium supplements or other diuretics while on Aldactone.
Prior to taking this medication, inform your doctor if you have liver disease or if you are using a steroid or any other diuretic. Refrain from consuming alcohol, as it may amplify some side effects of Aldactone. Also, avoid a diet high in salt, as excessive salt intake can lead your body to retain water, potentially reducing the effectiveness of this medication. Do not use salt substitutes or low-sodium dairy products that contain potassium, as they could elevate your potassium levels while on Aldactone.
Be cautious about overheating or dehydration during workouts and in hot conditions. Adhere to your doctor's guidance regarding fluid intake, as consuming too much fluid can be just as dangerous as not drinking enough. If you are being treated for high blood pressure, continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as high blood pressure often does not present any symptoms.
Aldactone should not be used if you have kidney disease, are unable to urinate, suffer from high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), or if you are taking potassium supplements or other potassium-sparing diuretics like Aldactazide, amiloride, or triamterene.
Before using Aldactone, inform your doctor if you have heart disease or liver disease. If you have any such conditions, you may require a dosage modification or special tests to safely use Aldactone.
Potential side effects of Aldactone include headache, diarrhea, cramping, drowsiness, skin rash, nausea, vomiting, impotence, irregular menstrual cycles, and abnormal hair growth. Patients should be closely monitored for fluid and electrolyte imbalances (such as low sodium, low magnesium, and high potassium). Breast enlargement (gynecomastia) may also occur, which relates to the dose and length of treatment; this usually resolves upon stopping treatment with spironolactone.
